Freedom Schools

The CDF Freedom Schools program began in 1964 to give Black children great learning experiences and keep them safe. College students volunteered to teach subjects like Black history and constitutional rights, helping kids think independently and solve problems. Since 1995, the program has focused on improving reading skills, strengthening families, connecting kids to important services, and developing community leaders.

Omega CDC has proudly been a Freedom School for 15 years. Every year, our scholars impress us, and this year was no different. The Freedom School Finale was amazing! For the first time, we combined the EJ Brown and Fairview sites, and the result was incredible. Our scholars’ hard work and dedication really stood out.

Each day starts with Harambee, where students sing, dance, cheer, and get excited for learning. Seeing all our scholars together at Harambee is very moving. It shows how important positive interactions are. We are so proud of our scholars, student leader interns, staff members, and everyone involved in our summer program. It truly matters, and we are grateful to everyone who participates.
