Omega CDC Receives Canary Award from Senator Sherrod Brown

07/15/2024

Omega Community Development Corporation, lead organization for the Hope Zone Promise Neighborhood, has been honored with the prestigious Canary Award from Senator Sherrod Brown at the Ohio Women’s Leadership Summit on July 13. Omega CDC was one of five women-led organizations in Ohio recognized for their outstanding contributions to community development and empowerment.

The Canary Award, named after the canaries used in coal mines as early warning signals of dangerous conditions, celebrates women leaders who champion social justice and community well-being. This award highlights those dedicated to improving the lives of Ohioans through service, advocacy, and innovative solutions.

Receiving this award is a testament to the impactful work Omega CDC has been doing, particularly through the Hope Zone Promise Neighborhood, which aims to improve educational and community outcomes across 17 neighborhoods in Northwest Dayton.

The recognition by Senator Brown underscores the importance of the National Promise Neighborhood Coalition’s efforts. In 2024, Coalition representatives visited Senator Brown’s office twice to advocate for increased funding for Promise Neighborhoods nationwide, highlighting the transformative work of the Hope Zone.

This award not only celebrates Omega CDC’s achievements but also reinforces the vital role of community organizations. As a Canary Award recipient, Omega CDC will continue to lead by example, inspiring others to join the Promise Neighborhood movement across Ohio and beyond.
