Hallowread started in 2023 with an idea from the Hope Zone Education Workgroup: make literacy part of the Halloween fun. The first event brought partners and families together at the Northwest Dayton Metro Library for activities that gave children a chance to learn, play, and earn prizes.
The event moved to the Hope Center in 2024. Now led by Omega CDC’s Education Department, Hallowread has found a home at Fairview Elementary and inspired Mathoween at Edwin Joel Brown Middle School. Scholars work their way through stations, solving literacy or math challenges for prizes. This year, both events were planned alongside parent-teacher conferences so families could take part while visiting their schools.
We love seeing an idea from a workgroup grow into something families can look forward to each year. Community members and partners saw an opportunity, put it into an action plan, and worked together to make it happen. That’s the power of collective impact.
